100th Day!

Our words of the week are:
la grand-mère, le grand-père, je peux, le ballon,
un autobus, une école, je joue, le cadeau

We are finally looking at the 'on' sound this week. This has been a long time coming, and many students already know it thanks to words like bonbon and bonjour, which we see very often. The best way to learn this sound (which is not like the english word) is to ask your student to say the word "bonjour". Listen for the subtle difference between this rounder 'on' and our previous, and wider 'en' ("vent") sound.
Words include: son, mouton, on, vont, avion, chanson, jeton, bouton, pardon

Today was the 100th day of school! It's crazy how time flies. I feel like I know the kids SO well now, they will certainly be hard to let go of in a few short months! We did a few fun math activities to celebrate the 100th day. Check out the poster your child is bringing home and ask about each activity as well as their counting and adding challenge that they did with their small group.

This week many grade 1s are participating in house-league games, which take place at morning and afternoon recess. Ask your athlete which team he/she is on and whether they have had their first game yet! (PS - All participants should have gym shoes here all week as they play almost every day.)

Today, we also had a great presentation by a storyteller. She told stories to do with leadership, fairness, and African heritage. Ask about the turtle, the boy in line, and the coffee! As you may have guessed, this presentation was scheduled in honour of African heritage month, as was the Nelson Mandela evening. Last week in class we read a true story about a Canadian woman who fought for equal rights back in the 1940s. Please ask the children about Viola Desmond, if they haven't already told you.

Last thing - if we are meeting for an interview, I will include a confirmation in your envelope tomorrow. Everyone got one of their preferred times. Let me know if this time no longer works for you, otherwise, I'll see you very soon.
